The shade-loving perennial flower, toad lily is a star in the fall garden. Here, ‘Sinonome' toad lily (Tricyrtis ‘Sinonome') shows off a profusion of  orchid-like flowers arching over the green and white blades of ‘Ice Dance’ sedge.

One of the most exotic flowering perennials is, in my opinion, the toad lily. Its name does not do justice to its unique, orchid-like flowers that come in a blend of purple, white and more. Some varieties even have intricate patterns on the flower petals. A favorite of mine is the old-time cultivar, ‘Sinonome’ toad lily, which has 2-3 ft arching stems adorned, from top to bottom, with ivory flowers dotted with burgundy-purple spots and blotching.
